What Are Common Problems with Braces?

Common Problems with BracesBraces are a solution to many common problems that develop as the teeth grow into the mouth and shift with age. These problems can be more severe than just crooked teeth, such as jaw and teeth misalignments. Even though braces can fix a crooked smile and many related issues, further problems can develop during treatment if the patient is not following proper oral hygiene habits.

Gingivitis

Gingivitis is a form of gum disease that develops from poor oral hygiene habits. Improper brushing or flossing can leave bacteria between the teeth that cause the gums to become irritated and inflamed. Patients with gingivitis may notice that their gums bleed while brushing or flossing. The best way to fight gingivitis is with proper oral hygiene. Even though it is difficult to floss with braces, it is essential to preventing gingivitis and maintaining optimal oral health.

Thumb Sucking

Thumb sucking is a common habit in infants and young children. Most children stop by the age of four. However, if thumb sucking persists, it can cause issues as teeth erupt and develop. Children who suck their thumbs more aggressively or frequently will experience more severe issues. Thumb sucking will cause misalignment of the teeth from an early age, which will make your child require more extensive orthodontic care to correct the position of the teeth. While braces are an effective solution to these problems, it is best to stop thumb sucking early to minimize the amount of treatment needed.

Jaw and Teeth Misalignments

Jaw and teeth misalignments are common as the jaw and teeth develop. Children may develop an overbite, underbite, or crooked teeth as a natural result of their development. If left untreated, misalignments can cause the teeth to wear down, contributing to a range of other negative effects. Braces are typically the best treatment option for jaw and teeth misalignments—although if these problems develop early enough, two-phase orthodontics may also be an appropriate approach.
