Patients often have questions regarding their orthodontic treatment. Below, you’ll find commonly asked questions that relate to the services we offer at our offices in Lovejoy, Fairburn, and Powder Springs. Smile Studios Orthodontics welcomes patients from Marietta, Atlanta, and the nearby areas of Georgia.
Why Should I See an Orthodontist?
An orthodontist is a specialized form of dentistry that focuses on enhancing the alignment of the teeth for a healthier bite and a straighter smile. Orthodontists offer treatments that dentists and other professionals cannot offer, including braces, Invisalign®, and retainers. An orthodontist can help you achieve beautiful, healthy teeth that will last a lifetime.
When Should My Child See an Orthodontist?
According to the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), children should see an orthodontist by the age of seven. By bringing your child in for early treatment, your orthodontist can address developing issues before they become severe and require more extensive treatment.
When Are Braces Used?
Braces are the most common orthodontic treatment. Braces are used to correct the alignment of the teeth and jaw to produce a healthier bite and a straight smile. The braces treatment may also be combined with other orthodontic treatments to achieve the desired results. Braces can be an effective treatment option for all ages. Smile Studios Orthodontics offers several types of braces so that each patient can enjoy personalized care.
How Long Will I Have to Wear Braces?
The duration of your braces treatment will largely depend on the position of your teeth and jaw before beginning treatment. While some patients may only require braces for a little over a year, patients with more severe misalignments may require a longer treatment. During your initial consultation, Dr. Venn will provide you with an estimate once he has developed your personalized treatment plan. To learn more, visit our page on braces FAQs.
What is Orthodontic Surgery and When is it Needed?
Orthodontic surgery is a more aggressive treatment option that may be used when traditional treatment options, such as braces, cannot correct a patient’s problem. Orthognathic surgery, also called jaw surgery, is the orthodontic surgery technique used to enhance the alignment of the jaw. In many cases, this procedure may be combined with traditional orthodontic treatments for optimal results.
How is Recovery After Orthodontic Surgery?
The initial recovery period following orthognathic surgery takes about six weeks. During this time, patients may experience soreness, bruising and swelling in the jaw area. As a result, patients may find it difficult to eat for a few weeks, and may want to stick to softer foods until they heal. After this recovery period, additional orthodontic treatments, such as braces, may be used to further enhance the results. Despite this quick turnaround, it can take up to a year for the jaw to fully recover from surgery.
